Keeping it Simple

Despite its Palo Alto address, this modern farmhouse exudes the essence of Scandinavian simplicity

Inspired by the Scandinavian countryside farms that shaped our Swedish client's childhood, this Northern California home is characterized by its clean lines, natural materials, and functional beauty. Because it is surrounded by smaller, older homes, the structure was set back from the street and screened with landscaping for a more modest street presence. The front gables are rotated to imitate the gables on the second floor, allowing for lower eave lines to protect neighbors’ privacy. Unlike its Scandinavian origins, the back of the house spills onto a large patio, yard, and pool in celebration of California’s mild climate. The pool house is a simplified version of the main residence, echoing its style and detailing.
