A Home For Hosting
With careful attention paid to retaining historic details, a 1920’s home is reimagined for twenty-first century entertaining
Graciousness never goes out of style. So when a busy professional and single father with an affinity for entertaining and reverence for classic architecture purchased a 1920s Birge Clark-designed abode, he envisioned generous interior and exterior spaces designed for high-quality hosting.
To maintain the architectural integrity of the Spanish Colonial Revival structure encircled by protected oak trees, FGA incorporated the façade’s original roofing tiles and restored the feature stucco details and front door. Those elements that could not be restored were supplemented with reproductions that were meticulously crafted to match their predecessors. Across the back of the house, two new wings were added—one with a master suite and another with a great room and open kitchen. A main hall sided with French-doors opens to an outdoor loggia designed for fireside dining, living, and entertaining. From this all-seasons haven, views of the fountain and pool can be enjoyed, along with access to the bocce ball court, daybed pavilion, and the pool house and ADU.

Inside, the home’s second story layout was efficiently and effectively reconfigured to offer four bedrooms and four bathrooms in a footprint that previously afforded three and two. New fixtures, finishes, decorative lighting, and up to date control systems enhance livable luxury and address current energy and sustainability goals. The interiors were carefully considered with the client's goal of creating a refined and elegant space that draws one into its luxurious warmth without the intimidation of a decorators heavy hand. Involved in every decision, from the tiny details to the grand brushstrokes, the client's eye for architecture, design and color contributed to a timeless interior. One of his friends offered that if Brunello Cucinelli was a home, this would be it.
