Modern Maybeck

Guided by the design principles of early 20th century California architecture, a longtime Atherton estate is reimagined as a stately custom home set withing a lush Peninsula landscape

Sometimes all it takes is a fresh perspective. For these longtime Atherton residents, the goal was to thoughtfully transform their family home for a new chapter centered on hosting grandchildren and gathering across generations. Rather than begin entirely anew, FGA retained select perimeter walls to preserve the home’s generous footprint while fully reconfiguring the interior layout – a strategic approach for  large Atherton residential renovations. The resulting custom home is organized around a grand entry hall oriented to frame long garden views, reinforcing the historic estate character of the property. Stylistically, the clients hoped the residence would “feel like the oldest house on the block,” blending seamlessly with the surrounding Atherton neighborhood. Inspired by the iconic work of Bernard Maybeck, who designed the husband’s childhood home, FGA carefully studied the layered rafters, outriggers, and brackets that define early California Arts and Crafts architecture. These elements balance historic influence with contemporary refinement. The heavy timber was specially sourced, carefully measured, cut and numbered offsite, and then meticulously reassembled on the premises, reflecting the level of craftsmanship invested in this Atherton estate home.
