Garden and Glass

On an irregular Menlo Park lot, creativity and critical thinking transform constraint into a refined contemporary custom home

Not every new build arrives neatly packaged, but even a challenging site can yield elegant results. Designing this contemporary Menlo Park custom home on a narrow, trapezoidal lot required strategic site planning and creative problem-solving to maximize light, privacy, and usable outdoor space.  The single-family residence is composed of two distinct wings: a single-story pavilion housing the primary suite and a two-story volume containing the children’s bedrooms, kitchen, living room, and dining room. Wood, metal, stone, and stucco interlock across the façade, visually uniting the two forms while reinforcing the home’s modern Peninsula character.  Together, the wings embrace a generous central garden complete with a built-in barbecue, bar, and bocce court – creating a protected outdoor room that extends the living spaces and supports year-round indoor-outdoor living in Menlo Park’s temperate climate.
