Portola Valley Residence Under Construction

Construction is underway on a new custom residence in Portola Valley, California. The project includes a 4,200-square-foot main house and a 1,060-square-foot detached garage and gym.

The design takes cues from the relaxed character of California ranch architecture while introducing a modern material palette. Stone and stucco exterior walls are paired with dark metal trim and tall metal-clad doors and windows. A mix of gabled and flat roof forms helps break down the massing while giving the home a clear architectural identity.

Vaulted interiors, layered materials, and a courtyard around an existing pool

The site slopes gently from the backyard toward the street, allowing the house to step naturally with the terrain. The home is organized in an L-shaped plan around the existing pool, creating a sheltered outdoor space that connects directly to the main living areas. Much of the existing backyard landscape will remain intact, with new planting focused primarily around the new construction.

Inside, the home balances contemporary detailing with warm natural materials. Flush baseboards and door jambs create clean architectural lines, while wood paneling and tambour details add texture throughout the interiors. The vaulted great room forms the heart of the house, with large expanses of glazing facing the backyard and a wood tongue-and-groove ceiling above. Skylights and a central hearth further anchor the space.
