Opening to the preserve, with warm, crafted interiors
The house takes cues from the traditional California ranch style. The form is simple and low, with an open plan and a focus on natural materials. Warm stone quarried in Northern California, metal-clad windows, and dark bronze corrugated metal roofing give the home a quiet, durable character that fits comfortably within the Portola Valley landscape.
The design responds closely to its setting. At the front, the home relates to the scale of the neighborhood. At the back, it opens to the natural preserve with a strong indoor-outdoor connection. Native planting helps tie the house to its surroundings and supports a more sustainable landscape approach.
Inside, the interiors are simple with a slightly traditional feel. White oak, stained beams, and soft plaster create a warm base. A few arches soften transitions between spaces. Zellige tile and V-groove cabinetry add texture and a hand-crafted quality. The layout is designed for a young family, with open, flexible living spaces that can adapt over time.
The project team includes MJK Homes as builder, Christian Douglas Design for landscape architecture, and S/A Studio for interior design.
